Honors Studio: Performance Art Ritual!

cardboard, hot glue, acrylic paint, face lotion, cornstarch, water

The fate of the piece lies in the audience, not mine. I place my trust in others advocating for my choices, and making myself vulnerable, something I struggle with personally. My attempts at self advocacy are nonexistent.

One of my favorite parts of this piece was the interactions I had with people, and all the decisions I made. Many asked me to draw their friends. My sister (probably to spite me) asked for pink, a color I didn't have mixed, so I made it specially for her. Lots asked for circles, smiley faces...birds, teachers. At one point, one of the cardboard panels got loose. I decided I would give it to a person who spinned the mystery option at the end of the show.

Progress, close ups, videos...

1. SKETCH
My initial ritual was very literal: I thought of my struggle with self advocacy and putting my voice out there, which is why I keep a journal to write down my thoughts and feelings instead. This initial brainstorming transformed into a catalyst of that: making myself vulnerable enough so that the audience must speak for me.

2. PROCESS...

With doing some research I made a body safe paint recipe mixing body lotion, cornstarch, water, and a little food coloring with water based acrylic paint, thinning out the paint so it would be easily spreadable. The spinner idea was inspired by twister, with some options I added like letting the audience choose what color or what exactly I painted.

3. ACTION!!!
