Honors Studio Installation: Memory

plastic bags, spray paint, children's book, shopping cart

Memory: When I was little, much of my time was spent in shopping carts, feeling bored as I was carted around from store to store for hours  in thrift stores and supermarkets. I always read a book and the exhaustion and overstimulation the environment brought me was always something to dread. The shopping cart was a safety net in a big world of really bright lights and sound. If I didn't have a book, I used my own imagination to pass the time.

There is audio playing songs from this playlist , distorted to sound like it's coming from a loudspeaker in a giant super market. The sound of a grocery store scanner plays over it. I want the audience to feel overstimulated over the sounds competing against each other, but find comfort in the atmosphere of the shopping cart just like I did.

My idea was that the inside of the cart would be nest like, a cocooning "safe zone." The storybook sits open. The inside of the cart is lined with the handle scraps I generated when I tied the plastic bags together and the cart was spraypainted a subtle gold.

When this piece is installed for the art show, I hope to make the bag chains longer so they stretch out towards the ceiling and expand a little beyond the wheels of the cart if I have time.
