THESIS: ZINES

These collection of zines (see 'Boundless' post) serve as an additional "artist's statement" for my thesis. Needs a better cover photo.

This first zine explores a question of a stage in creativity that I think is related to everyone.
Based off of times where I have been in such a mental state that I think everything I make is bad, even though I never finish it. I experimented with poetry and wording with the typewriter that I hope to explore in the next zines that I make. The idea behind these is that the message is more prominent through the typography rather than the quality that it is made of.

I have done a couple zines during my time at Peddie, and I always have felt they have translated my artistry well. For the specific zine I made for thesis 4, “why can’t i make good art?” ending with the statement “because it needs to be a little bad” felt like a question I really needed to ask myself at that moment. I had a different plan in mind for the zine initially, but I was so caught up in this idea of “failure” that I just went with it. If you don’t try, you don’t succeed. And trying does mean failing.  With my boundless piece and my zine appearing at the show along with the new zine, it felt really complete sitting next to pieces I had labored on in the past leading up to the statement of this zine. Most of the illustrations in the books were cutouts of failures as I tried drawing the same reference of a picture I took of myself sticking my tongue out. I couldn’t do it. Then, inspiration struck. One improvement that this piece could use is more exploration of the topic. I think the idea behind zines is that they’re not supposed to be books, but they can be informational and also silly. I could have leaned more into the storybook aspect I bought for my boundless piece and seen where the storytelling took me with this specific topic.
